2. Rosin helps the bowhair grab and release the string. The students will need rosin during the first semester. They should not use the rosin until I have taught them how to use it correctly. The basic beginner rosins in the wooden rectangles are fine for beginners. They cost $5 - 8. The nicer rosins (usually round, often in a more substantial case) can cost $15 - 25.

3. Shoulder Rests are required for violins and violas. These attach to the back of the instrument, and allow for proper posture and control of the instrument. The basic shaped sponge (around $5.00) at the music store is fine for beginners. Of course, the nicer, adjustable shoulder rests($15-$40) allow for more comfort and a better, personal fit. It is important to obtain the correct size shoulder rest (i.e. 3/4 violin, 14" viola). I will measure your child and recommend these sizes at one of our first meetings.

4. Rock Stop/ Endpin Holders are required for cellos and basses. This "donut" keeps the instrument's endpin from sliding away from the student. Many varieties are available. Please do not purchase the brand made partly of cardboard.
The basic black holder with the brass cup costs $8 - 10. The better, harder rubber holders cost $15-25. |
5. Soft Cloth for cleaning the rosin dust off the strings. A clean rag, washcloth, or other sturdy fabric is fine. This is not a "polishing" cloth, and it should have no chemicals on it.

6. Pencil. We use a pencil for more than just writing in the book. It also doubles as a bow hold teaching tool. (It does not have to say "I love orchestra" on it.) It does need to be a full length pencil.
